Contemporary age: part 2

The reign of Fernando VII.

When he arrived in Spain, after the war of independence, he wanted to go back to an absolute monarchy so he abolished the Constitution of Cadiz.

He persecuted the liberals and some of them left Spain to avoid jail.  Other liberals tried to take power through a coup d´etat (golpe de estado).

The American colonies took advantage of the difficult situation in the peninsula and started to fight for their independence. In 1816 Argentina became independent and by 1824 all the colonies, Except from Cuba were independent.


The Reign of Isalbel II



She was daughter of Fernando VII. During her reign, she consolidated the constitutional monarchy, so her power was limited by a constitution. 

- Conservatives: wanted more power to the queen than to the constitution
- Liberals: wanted more power to the constitution an limit the queen´s ones. 

It was a difficult period with military coup d’états (golpes de estado) and frequent changes of government. In 1868, the unhappy population started a revolution an Isabel left the country.

The end of the 19th century

In 1869, a foreign King, Amadeo de Saboya was brought to rule the country. This lasted just 2 years,

A republic – without a king but a president of government- was established.

In 1874 the monarchy of the Bourbons was restore under Alfonso XII.
